Ancient History & Ruins

Markt and the Belfry

Bruges centre, about 20 to 25 min from the ship by shuttle or taxi

The square is the obvious first stop, and the Belfry above it is the climb everyone wants: 366 steps with no lift. It is a busy site and booking online in advance is recommended, which is worth doing before you sail rather than on the day, and last entry is an hour before closing — the detail most likely to catch anyone on a late shuttle. Occasional maintenance closures are published, so check the calendar against your call date.

Ancient History & Ruins

Burg Square and the Basilica of the Holy Blood

Same transfer to Bruges; Burg square adjoins the Markt

The compact high-value stop when the clock is against you: entry to the Basilica itself is free, with a charge only for the treasury, and the square also carries the medieval Stadhuis and the Liberty of Bruges. Veneration of the relic takes place daily in the early afternoon, and during services access is restricted to those attending, so it can fall across the middle of a port day.

Beautiful Scenery

Bruges canal boat trip

about 30 min

Same transfer to Bruges; the landing stages are in the historic centre

About half an hour on the water, and the view of Bruges that photographs do not prepare you for. The catch for a cruise passenger is booking: individual visitors cannot reserve in advance, because tickets are sold only at the boat companies' own landing stages, so this is a queue-on-the-day decision rather than something to lock in beforehand. Operation is guaranteed only through the main season; outside it the jetties run on a rotation and the trip may not be available at all.

Excursion

Recommended

Ships berth in the western harbour, a working industrial port. How far you are from onward public transport depends on the berth you are given and on the transfer the ship lays on inside the port area, so treat it as something to confirm on the day rather than a fixed walk. Bruges, the reason almost everyone is here, is 20 km inland and always needs an onward leg — a ship's shuttle or a taxi is about 20 to 25 minutes and is the dependable option. Zeebrugge itself has a beach, a maritime attraction and a signposted heritage walk.

Which onward option exists changes with the day and the season

Which options exist at all depends on the date. The two stations cover opposite halves of the calendar — Zeebrugge-Dorp on weekdays outside July and August, Zeebrugge-Strand at weekends, on public holidays and through July and August — and bus 479 makes seven trips a day but not on Sundays. An independent traveller can plan around one of these and find it is the wrong one for their call date, with an onward leg from the berth on top. Confirm the current option with the operator for your own date.

Getting from the ship

To Bruges' historic centre

Ship's shuttle or taxi

About 20-25 minutes to Bruges. The dependable option, and the one most passengers should take.

Kusttram (De Lijn)

Every 10-20 minutes along the coast from Zeebrugge Kerk, a 7 minute walk. It does NOT go to Bruges — it runs De Panne to Knokke.

Train

The two stations cover opposite parts of the calendar. Zeebrugge-Dorp runs on weekdays OUTSIDE July and August, not at weekends or on public holidays; Zeebrugge-Strand covers weekends, public holidays and July-August. Neither is a year-round option on its own.

Bus 479

Bruges to Zeebrugge, seven trips a day, every day except Sundays — Saturdays included. Thin enough that it is a fallback rather than a plan.

Tender port: No

Exploring Zeebrugge

Simplest approach

Decide between Bruges and the coast rather than trying both. For Bruges, shuttle or taxi. For the coast, the Kusttram is frequent, takes contactless and sells day passes.

Take the shuttle

Bruges

20 km inland and UNESCO-listed. The port is not Bruges and the tram will not take you there, whatever the itinerary calls this call.

Genuinely good DIY

The Belgian coast

The Kusttram is frequent and reliable along the whole coast, with four Zeebrugge stops. Ostend and Knokke are easy.

Half a day at most

Zeebrugge itself

Seafront, the Swedish Quay viewing platform, the old fishing port, a 5.8 km heritage walk and a beach 3 km away. Enough if you skip Bruges; nobody sails here for it.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

5-6 hours to make Bruges worthwhile; 2-3 hours if you stay on the coast
