Sankeien Garden

2 hrs

A large Japanese garden holding seventeen relocated historic buildings — among them the former Tomyoji three-storey pagoda, the Rinshunkaku and the Choshukaku — and the sight the city's own visitors guide puts at the top of its list. Open 9:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:30, closed 26 to 31 December. Admission is ¥900 for adults and ¥200 for school-age children. It is away from the waterfront, so it is the trip you make instead of a second harbour stop, not as well as.

Minato Mirai 21 and the Red Brick Warehouse

2-3 hrs

The harbourfront district the city treats as its principal tourism area, and the easy half of a Yokohama day: from the Osanbashi or Shinko berths it is a flat walk, taking in the Red Brick Warehouse, Yamashita Park and the waterfront between them with no transport at all. Check your berth first — from Daikoku Pier, which takes the largest ships, this is a shuttle ride rather than a walk.

Excursion

Optional

Not Tokyo, and worth checking which berth. From Osanbashi, Chinatown, Yamashita Park and Minato Mirai are a walk, and Nihon-Odori station is about five minutes away. Shinko (Hammerhead) is also walkable. Daikoku Pier takes the mega-ships and sits roughly 15 km out with a shuttle. Central Tokyo is 25-40 minutes by rail from Yokohama Station — doable, but it is a separate city, not a short hop.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Four to six hours covers the waterfront properly on foot from Osanbashi or Shinko, and nothing in it needs booking. Adding Sankeien makes it a two-part day with a transfer in the middle — worth it on a long call, a squeeze on a short one. Central Tokyo is a different plan again, not an extension of this one.

Accessibility

The waterfront half of this call is flat and step-free from the Osanbashi and Shinko berths, which is what makes Yokohama one of the easier Japanese ports to do independently. Sankeien is a garden of paths and slopes rather than level ground; it admits holders of a disability certificate, and one accompanying person, free of charge.
