City of Arts and Sciences

Half a port day for ONE building

Valencia's landmark complex, and the one place a cruise day goes wrong by trying to do all of it. Visit València's own advice is that it “needs time” and that “it is best to have at least one day to explore it” — it puts the Oceanogràfic at about four hours, the Science Museum at about three and the Hemisfèric at about an hour and a half. On a port call, pick one building rather than a combined ticket. Bus 95 runs there directly and it is nearer the port than the old town.

Great Food & Dining

Mercado Central

1 hr

A modernist market hall of wrought iron, tile and stained glass with more than 250 fresh-produce stalls, on Plaza del Mercado in the historic centre. Check your call against the clock first: Visit València gives the hours as Monday to Saturday 07:30 to 15:00 and closed Sunday, so a Sunday call or an afternoon arrival misses it altogether.

Ancient History & Ruins

La Lonja de la Seda

45 min-1 hr

The late-Gothic silk exchange built between 1482 and 1533 and inscribed by UNESCO in 1996 as a masterpiece of the style. It faces the Central Market across the square, which makes the two one stop rather than two. Entry is €2, Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 19:00 and Sunday and holidays 10:00 to 14:00, free on Sundays and public holidays.

Getting around

Excursion

Optional

Straightforward once you are at the terminal gate, but check the berth first — from the outer piers the commercial terminals prohibit walking and a free port shuttle takes you to the gate. From there the Old Town is 20-30 minutes by EMT bus lines 4 or 19, or 5-10 minutes by taxi. The City of Arts and Sciences is nearer the port and bus 95 reaches it directly, so starting there and working inland is the efficient order on a short call. The nearest beach is walkable from the terminal.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Treat this as a choice, not a checklist. The historic centre — market, Lonja and the streets around them — is three to four hours including the transfer from the gate. The City of Arts and Sciences is a separate plan: Visit València says the complex is best given at least a full day, so a port call realistically fits ONE of its buildings. Attempting both halves of the city in one call is the common mistake here.
