Piazza Unità d'Italia
1 hr
The square that opens straight onto the sea, a few flat minutes from Stazione Marittima and the natural first stop off the ship. Piazza della Borsa, the Canal Grande and the historic coffee houses follow on from it without any transport at all, which is what makes a short call here work.
Ancient History & Ruins
Miramare Castle and Park
2-3 hrs
The white Habsburg castle on its promontory, about 20 minutes out by bus and the one sight here worth leaving the centre for. Two useful facts from the state museum that runs it: admission to the park is free all year round, and individual visitors need no reservation for the castle — so this can be decided on the day. The castle opens daily 9:00 to 19:00 with the ticket office closing at 18:30, while the park keeps shorter hours in winter, closing as early as 4:00pm from November to February.
Ancient History & Ruins
Castello di San Giusto
1.5 hrs
The hilltop castle and civic museum above the old town, with the Lapidario Tergestino, the armoury and the ramparts. Hours are 10:00 to 19:00 daily from 1 April to 11 October, last entry 18:30, and 10:00 to 17:00 Tuesday to Sunday from 12 October, last entry 16:30. The approach on foot is steep and uneven — but a lift is available on request from the viale della Rimembranza entrance, which is worth arranging rather than discovering afterwards.

Getting around

Excursion
Optional
You step off into the city. Stazione Marittima sits on the waterfront and Piazza Unita d'Italia — the square that opens onto the sea — is a few minutes along a flat, signposted promenade. Piazza della Borsa, the Canal Grande and the historic coffee houses follow on from it without transport. Two things need more effort: Miramare Castle is about 20 minutes out by bus, and the San Giusto hill is steep with uneven paving. Berths vary, so the walk can be 5 or 20 minutes, but it is a walk either way.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
Five to six hours does this port properly and very little of it needs planning. The centre — Piazza Unità, the Borsa, the Canal Grande and the coffee houses — is two to three hours on foot from the berth. Miramare adds about 20 minutes each way by bus, and San Giusto is a short steep climb from the centre. Nothing here requires a reservation for an individual visitor.
Accessibility
This is a flat, walkable call until you leave the waterfront, and both exceptions have an answer. San Giusto is steep with uneven paving on foot, but the castle offers lift access on request from the viale della Rimembranza entrance, arranged by telephone in advance. Miramare's park is level, free and open all year, so the grounds remain available even if the castle interior does not suit.
