Ancient History & Ruins
Senso-ji and Asakusa
2-3 hrs
Rail with at least one change, via Shimbashi
Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple, approached through Nakamise-dori, a roughly 250-metre avenue of about 90 stalls selling crafts and snacks. The main hall opens at 6:00, and from October to March at 6:30 — early enough that a ship docking at dawn can reach it before the crowds the temple is otherwise known for.
Family Fun
The Odaiba waterfront
2-3 hrs
The same Yurikamome line as the terminal; Daiba station is one stop from the terminal's own station.
The answer for a short call or a late clearance. Waterfront shopping complexes, the Miraikan science museum and a replica Statue of Liberty facing the Rainbow Bridge, which GO TOKYO says takes 30 minutes to walk across. Nothing here needs a transfer into the city.
Beautiful Scenery
Shibuya and the Scramble Crossing
2 hrs
The crossing that floods every couple of minutes outside Shibuya Station, best photographed from a surrounding building rather than street level. Shibuya Sky's rooftop deck sits 229 metres up with a 360-degree view and is connected directly to the station. Reachable, but it is a commitment: this is the far side of the city from Odaiba.

Helpful
The Odaiba terminal has a Yurikamome station named after it, about eight minutes' walk from the building, which makes a DIY day genuinely practical — but central Tokyo is a further rail leg on top, so this is a rail day, not a walk-off. Pick one or two districts; Odaiba, Asakusa and Shibuya are each realistic on a single call, all three are not. A Suica or PASMO card covers the network. Watch the return buffer: the distance that makes Tokyo reachable also makes it easy to misjudge getting back.
Getting from the ship
Ships berth at Tokyo International Cruise Terminal in Odaiba, Koto-ku, which opened in September 2020. GO TOKYO puts the terminal's own Yurikamome station roughly 8 minutes on foot away, then approximately 20 minutes on the Yurikamome to Shimbashi, with Tokyo Station a further 3 minutes on the JR Yamanote or Keihin-Tohoku line. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government also runs a free shuttle to Tokyo Teleport Station on the Rinkai Line, but states that its timing depends on the ship and is subject to change, so it is not something to plan around.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
A full day, and one or two districts within it — no first-party source publishes a suggested duration for Tokyo, and the rail distances make three districts unrealistic on a single call
Accessibility
Unusually good at the port end. GO TOKYO states the terminal prioritises accessibility, with escalators, lifts and multipurpose restrooms on every floor, and the Yurikamome is step-free across its whole line, with lifts between street, ticket gate and platform levels plus Braille panels and audio guides. Beyond the Yurikamome it is less uniform: GO TOKYO says most stations have lifts, accessible toilets and tactile paving, and advises checking rather than assuming, and avoiding the 07:30-09:00 and 17:30-19:30 peaks.
Weather
The calendar matters more here than the forecast. GO TOKYO describes June to mid-July as a wet, humid rainy season, summer temperatures above 35°C with humidity often over 80 per cent, and a typhoon season beginning in August; Japan's national tourism body extends the typhoon risk into September. Autumn is the comfortable end of the range. Winter rarely drops below freezing.
Crowds
Cherry blossom season from late March into early April is described by Japan's tourism body as the busiest time of year, along with weekends, national holidays and Golden Week in late April and early May. Its own crowd-avoidance advice is to ride the trains after 10am on weekdays, and that temples and shrines are quietest from opening. A ship in port on a spring weekend meets Tokyo at its fullest.
