Beaches & Snorkeling
Mount Maunganui Main Beach
1-2 hrs
New Zealand's best-known surf beach, a short walk from the port and now the main reason a low-effort day still works here, with showers, toilets, cafes and shops alongside. It is a real surf beach with rips and no published patrol dates, and the northern end nearest the mount sits inside the landslide exclusion zone.
Family Fun
Hobbiton Movie Set
2.5 hrs for the tour, plus the drive each way
Just over an hour's drive each way, plus the 2.5-hour tour
The film set on private farmland, seen only on a fully guided walking tour of about 2.5 hours including the coach legs between The Shire's Rest and the set. Book ahead — walk-ins often cannot be accommodated — and note there is no operator-run transfer from the port.
Nature & Wildlife
Te Puia
1.5 hrs for the standard tour, plus the drive each way
About an hour's drive to Rotorua, plus the 1.5-hour tour
Home of the Pohutu Geyser and the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, open 8.45am to 5pm daily with the last tour at 4pm. Booking in advance is required. The geyser is natural and unscheduled — it plays many times a day but nothing is guaranteed.

Excursion
Helpful
Mount Maunganui's beach and township are close to the berth, so a low-effort day still needs no arrangements — but the Mauao tracks are CLOSED and have been since the fatal landslide of 22 January 2026, with Tauranga City Council stating it has no timeline for reopening. Rotorua's geothermal parks and the Hobbiton set are substantial road journeys.
More details
This is a port where the two possible days barely overlap. Staying at the Mount is easy and self-contained; going inland is a committed round trip where a booked excursion carries the timing risk rather than you. Decide which day you want before arrival, not on the gangway.
Rotorua and Hobbiton are where a booked trip carries the timing risk instead of you — both are over an hour each way by road, and Te Puia and Wai-O-Tapu both run to fixed schedules.

Main risk
Road distance to Rotorua and Hobbiton
Inland excursions to Rotorua and Hobbiton are long round trips, and independent transport back is limited.
Getting from the ship
To Mount Maunganui township and Main Beach, with Rotorua as the major inland excursion gateway
Walking
The default for the Mount Maunganui township, its shops and Main Beach, all close to the port exit on the Mount Maunganui side.
Hop On Hop Off bus
Tourism Bay of Plenty describes the Tauranga Hop On Hop Off Bus as specifically designed for cruise passengers, with tickets available online or at the port. It is a paid tourism service, not a complimentary port shuttle.
Local bus or taxi
How Tauranga city across the harbour is reached. Tourism Bay of Plenty also lists a two-hour local sightseeing bus tour on cruise days, plus taxi and car rental through the i-SITE.
Organised excursion
The realistic way to do Rotorua or Hobbiton. Tourism Bay of Plenty gives a one-hour drive to Rotorua and just over an hour to Hobbiton.
Public transport: Limited
Walkable from ship: Yes
Tender port: No
Exploring Tauranga
Simplest approach
Walk. The township, its cafes and the beach are minutes from the gate. Do NOT plan on Mauao: the summit and base tracks are closed inside a landslide exclusion zone and there is no published reopening date. Anything beyond the township — Tauranga city across the water, or Rotorua and Hobbiton inland — needs arranged transport or a local bus, since no shuttle is provided.
Best DIY choice
Mount Maunganui
Walk out of the gate for the township and the beach, which still make a complete day with no booking or transport arrangement. The Mauao tracks are closed and fenced, so the headland walk is not available.
Transport needed
Tauranga city
Across the harbour rather than next door — despite what some port maps imply, it is not a walk. A local bus or taxi is required.
Book ahead
Rotorua & Hobbiton
Substantial inland drives. With no port shuttle and limited independent options, these are the calls where a booked excursion carries the timing risk instead of you.
Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
Two to three hours is a complete unhurried day in the township and on the beach; Rotorua or Hobbiton needs most of the call plus a deliberate return margin.
Accessibility
The township and beachfront are level and close to the port exit, which makes the walk-off day the easier option by some margin. CURRENT ADVISORY RATHER THAN A PERMANENT FACT: the Mauao tracks are inside a landslide exclusion zone and Mount Hot Pools is closed, so neither is available at any mobility level. Inland excursions are vehicle-based and their accessibility depends on the operator and the site.
Weather
Bay of Plenty weather is changeable and the walk-off day is entirely outdoors on an exposed beachfront; New Zealand sun protection matters more than the temperature suggests.
Crowds
The township absorbs a shipload reasonably well, but with the Mauao tracks closed the beach and The Mall carry the whole walk-off crowd rather than sharing it with the headland. Inland tour and transport capacity is the other pinch point on a busy day.
