Optional

Which pier your ship uses matters here — Havensight is a genuine 15-25 minute walk into downtown; Crown Bay is farther and less pedestrian-friendly, so a short taxi is the better call.

More details

St. Thomas has two cruise piers on opposite sides of Charlotte Amalie's harbor. Havensight (the busier of the two) sits about 1.2-1.7 miles from downtown — a flat, scenic 15-25 minute walk along the waterfront, or a few minutes by taxi. Crown Bay sits about 1.5-2 miles on the other side; the route into town is less pedestrian-friendly, so most visitors take a short taxi rather than walk. Taxis are shared, open-air "safari" vans with set per-person rates, readily available at both piers. Renting a car isn't recommended — driving is on the left, and the roads are steep, narrow, and winding.

Return risk

Low

Main risk

None significant — taxis are plentiful at both piers

Shared taxis line up at both piers and distances are short either way — no reported queue-prone bottleneck.

Getting from the ship

To Charlotte Amalie waterfront

St. Thomas has two cruise ports, and which one you get changes the day. The Virgin Islands Port Authority operates the Austin 'Babe' Monsanto Marine Terminal at Crown Bay, west of Charlotte Amalie Harbour, with taxi services at the site and a shopping centre alongside. The other is Havensight, the West Indian Company dock, on the Charlotte Amalie side.

Exploring Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (USVI)

Simplest approach

Check your berth before planning. From Havensight, walking into Charlotte Amalie along the waterfront is realistic. From Crown Bay you are on the far side of the harbour, and VIPA lists taxis at the terminal for good reason — take one rather than attempting the walk. Shared open-air taxis serve both piers.

Depends on your pier

Charlotte Amalie

VIPA describes the Charlotte Amalie Waterfront as running parallel to the shopping district, so the town is compact once you reach it. Getting there is a walk from Havensight and a taxi from Crown Bay.

No transport needed

The terminal shopping areas

Both cruise ports have their own retail and dining — Havensight Mall and the Crown Bay Center — so a low-effort day works from either.

Taxi or tour

Beaches and farther island

Magens Bay and the island's other beaches are a drive from both piers. This is a taxi decision, not a walking one, whichever terminal you have.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

6-8 hrs comfortably covers downtown plus one further sight
