Optional
Downtown Philipsburg and Great Bay Beach are both a genuine 15-20 minute walk (or a 5-minute water taxi) from the pier — no transport is strictly needed for a beach-and-town day.
More details
Ships dock directly at the AC Wathey Pier in Great Bay. Downtown Philipsburg and Front Street are about a 15-20 minute walk along the harbor, well-marked and lined with shops. A water taxi covers the same distance in about 5 minutes for a small fee. Great Bay Beach sits right alongside the walk into town. Maho Beach (the low-overhead-planespotting beach) is much farther — about 5-11km, roughly 20-35 minutes by taxi or shared minivan.

Main risk
Crowding at the meeting point on multi-ship days
The walk/water-taxi options are both quick and reliable, though the port area itself can feel crowded when several ships are in — give tour meeting points extra time on busy days.
Getting from the ship
To Philipsburg (Front Street & Great Bay Beach)
Ships berth at the Dr. A.C. Wathey Cruise and Cargo Facility on Great Bay, just outside Philipsburg. Port St. Maarten says over 100 cabs wait at the terminal alongside buses, water taxis and tour pickups, and the terminal itself has shops, bars and the Harbour Point Village.

Exploring Philipsburg, St. Maarten
Simplest approach
Walk or take the water taxi. The port states Philipsburg is a 15-minute walk from the terminal, and the water taxi is the alternative in the heat, landing at Captain Hodge Wharf, Walter Williams Jetty or Bobbys Marina on the Philipsburg waterfront. Either way no booking is needed.
Best DIY choice
Philipsburg
Front Street, the Boardwalk and Great Bay are all reachable on foot or by water taxi. This is the day that needs no arrangements.
Taxi from the terminal
Island beaches
Maho, Orient Bay and the rest are a drive. With over 100 cabs at the pier this is easy to organise, but it is a taxi decision rather than a walk.
Longer trip
French side (Marigot)
Across to the French half of the island by road. Perfectly doable but it consumes most of a port day, so decide before disembarking.
