DIY vs. excursion

Can I DIY this?

Getting around

Excursion

Helpful

Downtown Skagway and the White Pass & Yukon Route train depot are both a short, mostly flat walk from most docks (5-15 minutes depending on which berth). The town's Skagway Municipal and Regional Transit runs a loop bus between the docks, Broadway Street, and the museum when ships are in port, so reaching anything farther out doesn't require a taxi.

Return risk

Low

The exception is the full White Pass summit excursion, where your return is scheduled by the train operator rather than something you manage yourself.

Getting from the ship

To White Pass & Yukon Route Railway

Skagway berths up to four large ships plus one small vessel, and the official visitor guidance puts the docks about three quarters of a mile from the downtown historic district. Berth assignment varies with traffic, so the length of that first leg is not fixed.

Exploring Skagway, Alaska

Simplest approach

Walk, or take the SMART bus. Skagway describes its level streets as making the walk from the ship a pleasant one, with the municipal SMART transit system available to speed the trip downtown instead. Either way no booking is needed for the town itself.

Best DIY choice

Skagway town

Broadway and the historic district are a short flat walk from the docks, or one SMART bus ride. The Visitor Information Center is in town if you would rather plan on arrival.

Book in advance

White Pass railway

The railway departs from its own depot by the waterfront and runs to a fixed timetable. It is the signature Skagway trip and the one most worth reserving before you sail.

Full-day commitment

Yukon and the far side of the pass

Trips over the pass into Canada are long road journeys and may involve a border crossing. Treat them as excursions with a guaranteed return rather than independent plans.
