The seafood market Shimonoseki is known for, and the reason to walk off the ship. Its famous walk-around sushi and fugu stalls run on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only — never Monday to Thursday.

The Kanmon pedestrian tunnel

A 780 m walkway under the Kanmon Strait connecting Honshu to Kyushu on foot, free to use and about fifteen minutes end to end. A short ferry crosses the same water in roughly five minutes.
Ancient History & Ruins
Akama Jingu

The vermilion shrine on the strait, built in the dragon-palace style and dedicated to the child emperor Antoku. A few minutes from Karato, so it folds into the same walk.

A compact walk-off call on the Kanmon Strait. The Karato market area is the reason to go ashore on foot — Shimonoseki is known nationally for fugu — and the strait crossing to Kyushu is right there. Beyond the waterfront the sights thin out, so this is a short-day port rather than one that rewards a long excursion.

Three to four hours covers the waterfront, the market and the shrine comfortably. Beyond that the sights thin out.
Accessibility
Ships dock at Arukaport in the Karato district itself, so the market, aquarium and shrine are a flat walk with no transport needed.
Weather
The waterfront is exposed, and late-summer typhoons are the usual reason a call here changes. The tunnel walk works whatever the weather.
Crowds
The Hinoyama ropeway has been suspended since late 2024 for renewal and is not expected back before 2027, so do not plan the lookout into the day.
