The painted street runs from the town square straight up to the little blue church at its head. One short walk from the pier, and the picture everyone takes home.

East Iceland's contemporary art centre, with changing exhibitions and a printmaking workshop. Closed Sundays and Mondays, and the one thing in town that works in bad weather.

Helpful
A town of about 700 people at the head of a 17 km fjord, and the only Icelandic port with a purpose-built terminal building. Both piers are a flat 400 m from the centre, so the Blue Church, Rainbow Street and the galleries are a short walk. Larger ships sometimes anchor and tender, typically when the Denmark ferry is in. Studlagil Canyon and the wider Eastfjords need a tour — roads are steep and weather-dependent, and distances are longer than the map suggests.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
Two to three hours covers the town comfortably; anything beyond it needs a vehicle and becomes a tour.
Accessibility
About 300 m of flat ground from either pier into town — one of the easier Icelandic calls to walk.
Weather
One road out, over a 620 m pass that closes regularly in winter. Only a concern if you plan to leave town.
Crowds
The Denmark ferry takes the main pier midweek from September to May, so ships anchor and tender on those days rather than docking.
