From the Bell Street terminal at Pier 66 the city is immediately walkable — Pike Place Market is a short uphill walk and the waterfront attractions are along the same stretch. From the Smith Cove terminal at Pier 91, roughly three miles north, there is no public transit to the terminal and a taxi or ride-hail is effectively required to get anywhere.
More details
Most large Alaska sailings use Pier 91; Pier 66 handles a smaller set of lines. Because the two are not close to each other, hotel bookings, parking and transfers all need to be made against the correct pier. Downtown itself is compact and hilly, with light rail connecting the airport to the downtown core but not to Pier 91.
Return risk
Low
Main risk
Downtown traffic on turnaround days
Distances are short and taxis are readily available, so the main friction is embarkation-day congestion around the terminals rather than any risk of being stranded far from the ship.

To Pike Place Market
Walking
Realistic from the Bell Street terminal at Pier 66, which sits on the downtown waterfront. Not an option from Smith Cove at Pier 91, several miles north.
Taxi / rideshare
The Port of Seattle recommends rideshare, taxi or other transport services for Pier 91, where there is a ground transportation lot and a dedicated app-based rideshare area. Pier 66 also has a ground transportation lot in front of the terminal.

Exploring Seattle, USA
Best DIY access
Pier 66 — Bell Street
On the downtown waterfront, so the city starts at the terminal and Pike Place Market and the waterfront attractions are walkable. Used by a smaller set of lines.
Transfer needed
Pier 91 — Smith Cove
Serves most of the large Alaska ships. The Port of Seattle has confirmed the Magnolia Bridge bus stop is permanently closed and the pedestrian staircase unavailable, so a road transfer is the practical way in and out. Passengers do not choose their terminal.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
A pre-cruise day rather than a rushed embarkation morning
Accessibility
Downtown Seattle is notably hilly between the waterfront and the market level, though lifts and graded routes exist.
Weather
Rain is common outside high summer and most of the worthwhile sightseeing here is outdoors or involves walking between indoor stops.
Crowds
Saturday is the main Alaska turnaround day, and both terminals plus the surrounding roads are at their busiest late morning to early afternoon.
Worth booking ahead?
