The famous cliffside village. Independent visitors normally reach Oia by local bus or taxi from Fira rather than directly from the Old Port, so getting up to Fira is the first leg of the trip.

Helpful

DIY is realistic, but returning to the ship is the main challenge. Independent visitors normally rely on the Old Port cable car, where queues can become unpredictable on busy ship days.

More details

Santorini is always a tender port — there's no harbor for large ships to dock. From the Old Port (Skala), the cable car up to Fira takes only 3-5 minutes, so physical access isn't really the problem; it's the queue on both the tender and the cable car that can each run well over an hour on busy days. The 588-step staircase (30-90 minutes depending on fitness, and often shared with pack donkeys) is an alternative that avoids the cable car queue entirely, at the cost of a real physical climb.

Some cruise-line excursions may use alternative tender and coach arrangements, which can reduce reliance on the Old Port cable car. Exact arrangements vary by sailing and excursion.

Return risk

High

Main risk

Cable car + tender queues

Allow a generous return buffer, especially if visiting Oia — it adds another transport connection through Fira.

Getting from the ship

To Fira

Cable car

Old Port to Fira in three minutes over a 220 m rise, moving 1,200 people an hour, at €10 one way. Hours are seasonal and the last trip from the top station is fixed — 21:40 in September and October, 22:40 in high summer, but only 18:00 in November and March and 16:00 in midwinter.

The steps

587 steps by the port fund's own count, shared with the donkeys. They were closed entirely for about a week in July 2026 after a retaining wall collapsed, which is what makes them a fallback rather than a guarantee.

KTEL bus

All routes radiate from Fira. Fira to Oia has 26 departures a day between 07:00 and 21:00; Fira to Akrotiri has only twelve. KTEL publishes departure times but no journey durations for either.

Exploring Santorini, Greece

Simplest approach

Confirm which pier you are landing at before you leave the ship, because it may not be the one you return to. From the Old Port, take the cable car up early and check the last trip down from the top station before you go anywhere. From Athinios, everything is a road transfer.

Best DIY choice

Fira

Directly at the top of the cable car and the steps, with the caldera-rim walk and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera. The lowest-risk option because you are never far from your way back down.

Leave a wide margin

Oia

KTEL runs 26 departures a day from Fira, though it publishes no journey time. Buses fill at sunset, and you still have the cable car queue after that.

Check the day of the week

Akrotiri

The Minoan site is served from Fira by only twelve buses a day. In summer it closes at 15:30 on Mondays and Thursdays while running to 20:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays — an easy trap for an afternoon call.

A different day entirely

Landing at Athinios instead

Athinios is 8 km from Fira with no cable car and no steps, so you are wholly dependent on a coach, bus or taxi transfer. It does list disabled access, which the Old Port route does not.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

A caldera walk in Fira fits comfortably in a half day; adding Oia realistically needs a full port day given the bus connection

Accessibility

The 588-step staircase is not a realistic option for limited mobility; the cable car is the accessible choice but is not stroller- or pet-friendly. Streets in Fira and Oia are cobblestoned and uneven.

Weather

Hot and dry in summer (28-35°C/82-95°F); the island can be exposed to strong wind.

Crowds

Riding up in the first 30-45 minutes after tendering begins avoids most of the queue when the port is busy.
