DIY vs. excursion

Getting around

Easy

Excursion

Optional

Old San Juan is genuinely easy to explore on foot once you are in it. What changes is the start of the day: the Old San Juan piers sit at the edge of the historic district, while the Pan American Pier is a separate facility across the bay and needs a road transfer.

More details

Your access depends on the berth assigned to your sailing, so check your cruise documents rather than assuming. Beaches and the Condado hotel strip sit outside the old town and need a taxi from either berth. Puerto Rico uses the US dollar and English is widely spoken, which removes much of the usual friction of a first independent port day.

Return risk

Low

From an Old San Juan berth you are rarely more than a walk from the ship. From the Pan American Pier the return involves a road transfer, so leave more margin than the short distance suggests.

Walking

From the Old San Juan piers the historic district begins at the pier and the forts, plazas and restaurants are all reached on foot. This does not apply from the Pan American Pier, which is a separate facility across the bay.

Taxi / rideshare

The practical option from the Pan American Pier, and the usual way to reach Condado, the beaches or anywhere outside the old town from either berth.

Exploring San Juan

Best DIY access

Old San Juan Piers

The historic district is immediately walkable, so no transport arrangement is needed for the main sights. Both forts involve an uphill walk from the waterfront.

Transfer needed

Pan American Pier

A separate cruise facility across the bay from the old city. Old San Juan is still very much worth doing independently from here — it simply starts with a road transfer rather than a walk. Passengers do not choose their berth; it is assigned to the sailing.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

4-5 hrs to cover the old town and one fort without rushing

Accessibility

Old San Juan is steep in places and paved with uneven cobblestones; both fortresses involve ramps, slopes and steps.

Weather

Hot and humid year-round with limited shade on the fort approaches; afternoon showers are common in the wet season.

Crowds

Old San Juan absorbs crowds reasonably well, but the forts and the main plazas concentrate visitors when several ships are in.

Worth booking ahead?
