Reached on foot or by the Green Line's Gaslamp Quarter stop. The district association describes everything within it as about five minutes apart.

DIY vs. excursion

Yes

Getting around

Excursion

Optional

The Port built the Embarcadero promenade specifically for pedestrians and both cruise piers sit on it, so the waterfront, the Midway and the Gaslamp are a walk rather than a transfer.

More details

B Street Cruise Terminal at 1140 North Harbor Drive has two berths; Broadway Pier at 1100 North Harbor Drive has one. Both carry federal inspection facilities, which is what lets either handle an international turnaround. The USS Midway is on the same street at 910 North Harbor Drive. Broadway Pier does double duty as the Coronado ferry dock, so if your ship is there the ferry leaves from your own pier. For anything beyond the waterfront, the San Diego Zoo states that Rapid 215 and Route 7 connect the cruise terminal directly to Balboa Park.

Return risk

Low

Main risk

The hourly Coronado ferry

Low for anything on the Embarcadero, which is a walk, and for Balboa Park, which is a direct bus. The one real exposure is Coronado: the Broadway Pier ferry runs only hourly and boarding is subject to capacity, so a missed sailing costs a full hour. Trolley and bus frequencies are not published by MTS in static form.

Getting from the ship

To The Gaslamp Quarter and the Embarcadero

On foot

The Port states it built and maintains the Embarcadero promenade along San Diego Bay and designed it for pedestrian use. Both cruise piers are on it.

MTS trolley

The Green Line is the waterfront line, serving Seaport Village, the Convention Center, the Gaslamp Quarter, Santa Fe Depot, Little Italy and Old Town.

MTS bus

Rapid 215 and Route 7 connect the cruise terminal to Balboa Park and the Zoo, per the Zoo's own transit guidance.

Fares

$2.50 one way including two hours of transfers, or a $6 day pass. Tapping a PRONTO card or contactless caps the day automatically at the pass price, so there is no need to pre-buy.

Coronado ferry

Flagship runs from Broadway Pier every 60 minutes and from the Convention Center every 30; the crossing is 15 minutes and $9 one way.

Exploring San Diego, USA

Best DIY choice

The Embarcadero and the USS Midway

The Midway is at 910 North Harbor Drive, the same street as both piers, open 10:00-17:00 with last admission at 16:00. Buying online saves $2 on the door price.

One bus, no transfer

Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo

The Zoo names Rapid 215 and Route 7 as connecting the cruise terminal directly. The park itself is free to enter; its museums and the Zoo are not.

Watch the hourly ferry

Coronado

Fifteen minutes across from Broadway Pier, but departures from that pier are only hourly and boarding is subject to vessel capacity — the clearest return-to-ship exposure in an otherwise easy port.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

A full day is comfortable — the waterfront and Midway are a walk, and Balboa Park is one bus away

Accessibility

Both terminals have mobile passenger boarding bridges. The Embarcadero is a purpose-built promenade. The Zoo provides accessible parking, restrooms and habitat access with an on-call ADA shuttle, while noting steep grades in places. The Port's own passenger-information and terminal-facilities pages are currently 404, so terminal-level accessibility detail is not published.

Crowds

The Port publishes a season schedule that can be read for same-day ship counts, but no crowding guidance. Broadway Pier's dual use as the Coronado ferry dock means foot traffic there is not all yours.
