Isla Negra and Pablo Neruda's house

Half a day

The closest thing this port has to a signature sight, and it is on the same coastal strip rather than inland — in the comuna of El Quisco, about 4 km from El Quisco itself. Neruda bought the property in 1938 and renamed it for the colour of its rocks, writing Canto General here; the house is full of ships' figureheads, models and shells, and he and Matilde Urrutia are buried on the site. Closed Mondays, which rules it out for a share of calls.

Santiago

Most of the day

108 km east on Ruta 78

The capital, and the reason itineraries label this call Santiago. 108 km each way on a tolled motorway is most of a port day before you have seen anything, so this is a booked-transfer decision rather than an improvised one. Scheduled coaches run to San Antonio's bus terminal, but the return is the part that matters.

Beautiful Scenery

Valparaiso

Most of the day

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2003, inscribed for its late nineteenth-century port-city fabric spread over hillsides in a natural amphitheatre, and best known for the hillside ascensores: of an original 31, 16 are still working, among them El Peral of 1901 and Polanco, the only one that moves vertically. A genuinely distinctive day, though no official journey time from San Antonio is published, so settle the transport before committing to it.

Excursion

Helpful

This is a container port with no visitor district at the gate. Santiago, and the airport, are a substantial drive inland, so this day is a transfer rather than a port call.

More details

Treat the arrangements as the whole task. Most passengers move directly to Santiago or the airport, and the transfer is long enough that improvising it on the morning is a poor idea — book the transfer, or the cruise line's, before you arrive. Valparaiso and Vina del Mar are the coastal alternatives to the capital. The only distance any official source publishes from here is the municipality's 108 km to Santiago; none states a figure for Valparaiso or Vina del Mar, so do not assume either is the shorter trip.

Return risk

Main risk

Long road transfer to Santiago and the airport

Disembarkation port with a long inland transfer; the risk sits with onward travel rather than returning to the ship.
