DIY vs. excursion

Getting around

Excursion

Helpful

Whichever way you come ashore, the landing point is close to the centre and Punta Arenas is walkable. The penguin colonies at Magdalena Island and Seno Otway are boat or road trips well beyond the town.

More details

The tender variable matters here because the Strait is exposed and windy. If your ship is anchoring rather than berthing, treat any trip out of town with more caution, particularly the island penguin colonies which add a second boat crossing to the day.

For Magdalena Island or Seno Otway an organised trip handles the boat or road leg and the return timing, which is the part of a Patagonian wildlife day most exposed to weather.

Main risk

Tendering on larger ships; boat trips to island colonies

Larger ships tender in an exposed strait, and island penguin trips add a further boat crossing.

Walking

The default for the historic centre once ashore at the Arturo Prat terminal, which sits beside central Punta Arenas.

Taxi or minibus

Relevant when the call is allocated to Mardones, which EPAUSTRAL places in the Bahia Catalina sector north of the city, and for reaching anything beyond the centre.

Organised excursion

How Magdalena Island, Seno Otway and the wider Magallanes sights are realistically reached inside a port day.

Exploring Punta Arenas

Simplest approach

Come ashore by whatever arrangement your call is given, then walk: Plaza Munoz Gamero first, up to the Cerro de la Cruz viewpoint over the Strait, back down through the historic streets to the waterfront, and out to the municipal cemetery if the call is long. Return by the terminal or tender plan your ship has assigned rather than improvising at the end of the day.

Best DIY choice

Historic central Punta Arenas

The plaza, the viewpoint and the waterfront are compact and walkable from the Prat terminal, with no transport needed between them.

Worth the walk

Punta Arenas Municipal Cemetery

One of the city's most distinctive sights, a walk or short taxi from the centre rather than an excursion.

Excursion, book ahead

Magdalena Island and Seno Otway

The penguin colonies are boat or road trips well beyond the town, weather-exposed and on fixed schedules. Not a walk-off sight and not something to improvise.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Three to four hours covers the historic centre comfortably once the arrival transfer is allowed for; a penguin-colony excursion needs substantially more and usually most of the call.

Accessibility

The central streets are manageable, but two variables sit outside the city: which terminal the call is given, and whether the ship is alongside or at anchor. Excursion terrain, particularly at the island colonies, varies considerably and should not be assumed level.

Weather

Strong wind and rapidly changing Patagonian conditions are the defining feature here, and they affect tender operations and boat excursions more than they affect the town walk.

Crowds

Punta Arenas absorbs visitors easily, but EPAUSTRAL has handled four cruise ships at once — on a multi-ship day the pressure lands on taxis, minibuses and excursion capacity rather than on the sights.
