DIY vs. excursion

Can I DIY this?

Getting around

Excursion

Optional

DIY works well with a planned ride to the Malecón and back. The terminal surroundings are not the historic centre.

More details

The Terminal Marítima is on Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio, north of the central waterfront. Confirm your berth and return gate before leaving: the port authority distinguishes access for international cruise passengers from the departure gate used by local bay tours.

Return risk

Low

Main risk

Road transfer and correct cruise-terminal entry gate

Allow a buffer for the drive north and entry at the correct berth gate. A bay tour has its own boarding point and schedule, which may differ from the cruise ship.

Getting from the ship

To Malecón and historic centre

Taxi / pre-arranged car

A simple downtown transfer option. Agree the destination, fare and return arrangements before departing.

Walking in the centre

Combine the Malecón, church and Romantic Zone once downtown; cobblestones and uneven paths need care.

Local bus

Use only after confirming the current stop, destination and return service. Route numbers and fares have not been verified.

Bay excursion

Check the operator’s specific departure gate and check-in instructions; it is a separate embarkation from the international cruise ship.

Walkable from ship: No

Exploring Puerto Vallarta

Simplest approach

Ride to the Malecón, explore the sculptures and Guadalupe church, then choose a food stop or a walk into the Romantic Zone before returning by vehicle.

Best first visit

Malecón and historic centre

A walkable sightseeing combination after the transfer from the terminal.

Extend the city walk

Romantic Zone and Los Muertos area

Choose cafés, streets and the waterfront according to your remaining time.

Book a bay outing

Los Arcos Marine Park

The offshore rocks south of town are different from Los Arcos amphitheatre on the Malecón. Check boat timing and return logistics.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

A focused downtown outing fits more flexibly than combining the city with a long bay excursion.

Accessibility

Plan an accessible transfer if needed. Cobblestones, curbs and boat boarding differ from the paved Malecón; confirm assistance with the operator.

Weather

Plan for heat, sun exposure and possible rain during outdoor walking or boat outings.

Crowds

Cruise arrivals increase transfer demand; downtown and popular boat departures can be busy.
