West Bay Beach
Half a day
Road transfer to the far west of the island
The beach Roatán is known for, with the fringing reef close enough to swim out to from the sand. Not remotely walkable from Coxen Hole — this is a taxi, a water taxi via West End, or an organised transfer. Busiest in the middle of the day when several ships' passengers arrive at once.
Beaches & Snorkeling
Reef snorkelling and diving
2-4 hours
Roatán sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and the drop-off runs unusually close to shore, which is why the island is a serious dive destination rather than just a beach stop. Certified divers will find operators clustered in West End; snorkellers can do most of it from West Bay's beach.
Great Food & Dining
West End village
2-3 hours
A small, low-rise strip of dive shops, bars and restaurants just around the headland from West Bay, and the more characterful of the two. Often combined with a West Bay beach morning, with a water taxi between them.

Helpful
Two conditions, not one. First, which terminal: Celebrity states that its ships may dock at either Coxen Hole or Mahogany Bay, and the two are three miles and one taxi apart. Second, whether you will berth at all — the Roatán Tourism Bureau describes the facility as taking one vessel alongside and two at anchor, and NCL's own port page says a ship "will DOCK or ANCHOR OFF SHORE at this port", so a tender day is possible and should not be ruled out when planning.
More details
The terminal is on the Coxen Hole waterfront, next to the island's main town rather than out on its own. The Roatán Tourism Bureau describes the Town Center complex as holding duty-free shops, restaurants and bars, a supermarket, a pharmacy, an ATM, a post office and artisan vendors, with a zip line beside the pier; Celebrity's own page similarly describes a shopping mall, restaurants, an ATM and internet access. The Bureau's description of the passenger route out is straightforward: through the terminal building, past the tour booths, into the parking area where the coaches and taxis wait. What the terminal is NOT is a beach. West Bay — the postcard stretch most people come for — is at the far western end of the island, and West End, the smaller village of dive shops and restaurants, is next to it. Both are a road journey, not a stroll, and this is where the day's planning actually lives. The Tourism Bureau publishes set per-person taxi rates to West Bay and West End; agree the rate and the return arrangement before you set off rather than after. Coxen Hole town itself is immediately outside the gate and is a working Honduran town rather than a resort strip. It is genuinely walkable and worth a short look if that interests you, but it is not where the beaches, the reef or the wildlife attractions are.
Celebrity's own advice for Roatán is that "the easiest way to get around... is to book a shore excursion with transit included", and on the West Bay run that is a fair reading: a ship-sold tour is held for its passengers, whereas a taxi back is your problem alone.
Return risk
Moderate
Main risk
Single-road transfer back from West Bay
The island runs on one main road and the beaches are at the opposite end of it from the terminal. A slow run back from West Bay is the normal failure mode here, and it is worse on a multi-ship day. If your call turns out to be an anchorage rather than a berth, add the tender queue on top — the Tourism Bureau's own description of the facility allows for exactly that.
Getting from the ship
To West Bay Beach and the fringing reef
Walking
Good for the terminal complex and Coxen Hole town immediately outside it. Not an option for West Bay or West End, which are at the other end of the island.
Taxi
The default. Taxis wait beyond the terminal's tour booths, and the Roatán Tourism Bureau publishes set per-person rates to West Bay and West End. Agree both the fare and how you are getting back before you leave — no figure is recorded here because a quoted rate would date quickly.
Water taxi
Runs between West End and West Bay, which makes combining the two straightforward once you are out there. It does not connect either of them to Coxen Hole.
Organised excursion
Celebrity's own Roatán guidance recommends a shore excursion with transit included as the easiest way to get around the island. On the West Bay run the transfer, not the activity, is the part worth paying someone else to own.

Exploring Coxen Hole
Simplest approach
Taxi straight to West Bay for the beach and the reef, water taxi round to West End for lunch and a look at the village, then a taxi back with a generous margin. Agree the return before you leave the terminal rather than trusting to finding one later.
No planning needed
Coxen Hole terminal and town
Shops, food, ATM and WiFi in the Town Center complex, with the working town just outside the gate. The only part of the island you can reach on foot.
More planning needed
West Bay and West End
The beach and reef the island is known for, at the opposite end of the one main road. Taxi or organised transfer both ways; the Tourism Bureau publishes set taxi rates. Build in more return time than the outbound run suggests.
Different port entirely
Mahogany Bay / Isla Tropicale
A Carnival-built destination in Dixon Cove, about three miles away, with its own pier. If your ship calls there instead, none of the guidance on this page about the Coxen Hole terminal applies — see the separate Isla Tropicale record.
Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
A West Bay beach day works comfortably in five to six hours including both transfers. A terminal-and-town morning needs two. Anything trying to combine the far west with a wildlife or inland attraction is an organised-tour shape rather than a taxi-and-improvise one.
Accessibility
The Town Center terminal is modern and level. Beyond it the picture changes quickly: Coxen Hole's pavements are uneven, taxis are ordinary saloon cars and minibuses rather than adapted vehicles, and West Bay is reached across sand. Where a call is worked at anchor rather than alongside, tender boarding adds a step that is not always manageable.
Weather
Warm and humid year round, wettest from roughly October into January, and within the Atlantic hurricane belt. Reef visibility drops after heavy rain or a blow, which matters more here than at most Caribbean stops because the reef is the main draw. A northerly swell can also make a tender operation uncomfortable on the days a ship is at anchor.
Crowds
Roatán can take several ships at once across its two arrivals, and West Bay is where they all converge. The beach and the taxi rank feel the difference far more than the terminal does; an early start buys more here than almost anything else you can plan.
