Beautiful Scenery

Waimea Canyon State Park

Half a port day

Kauaʻi's canyon country and the island's signature view: Hawaiʻi State Parks describes 'a scenic drive, lookouts of the canyon, a viewpoint of Niʻihau Island, wildland picnicking and trails', open daily during daylight hours. Non-residents pay $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle to park. It is a genuine drive from Nāwiliwili and lies in the opposite direction to the north shore, so treat it as the day rather than one stop in it.

Nature & Wildlife

Wailua River State Park

2-3 hrs

The most practical of Kauaʻi's headline sights on a port day — the closest to the harbour, open daily 7am to 7.45pm, with no entrance fee. It takes in the ʻŌpaekaʻa and Wailua Falls vistas, the riverboat cruise to the Fern Grotto (a separate fee) and the Wailua Complex of Heiau, a National Historic Landmark.

Nature & Wildlife

Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge

2 hrs

One of the largest seabird nesting sites in Hawaiʻi, including a major red-footed booby colony, on the north shore. Two things decide whether it is possible at all: the US Fish and Wildlife Service opens it Wednesday to Saturday only, 10am to 4pm with arrival required before 3.30pm, and it states that reservations are required for every adult aged 16 and over. Adult entry is $11. Book before the ship docks, not on the day.

DIY vs. excursion

Excursion

Optional

Lihue is close by rather than at the pier, and Kauai's headline sights — Waimea Canyon and the north shore — are genuine drives. A rental car or a tour is the practical choice.

More details

Kauai rewards going further than the port area, which is exactly why the transport decision matters here. The north shore and Waimea Canyon are in opposite directions from Nawiliwili, so trying to combine both in one call is the mistake to avoid.

Main risk

Single-route roads to the north shore and Waimea Canyon

Attractions lie in opposite directions from the harbour and roads are largely single-route, so a delay has few alternatives.

Getting from the ship

Ships berth alongside at Nawiliwili Harbour on Kauai's east side, close to Lihue. The county's public bus, The Kauai Bus, operates in the Lihue area near the harbour.

Exploring Nawiliwili

Simplest approach

For Lihue and the immediate area, The Kauai Bus is a genuine option — but note the county runs no Sunday service and routes are island-perimeter rather than frequent-urban, so check the schedule against your call. For Waimea Canyon or the north shore, hire a car or book a tour: they lie in opposite directions and are beyond what a bus timetable supports in one port day.
