How to Visit Pompeii from Naples Cruise Port on Your Own
Pompeii is realistic to visit independently from Naples cruise port, but the train ride is only one part of the plan. Here is how to choose the right station, allow enough time at the archaeological site and avoid building a return schedule that is too tight for a cruise day.

How do you get from Naples cruise port to Pompeii?
Cruise ships in Naples use the Stazione Marittima cruise terminal in the city centre. From there, an independent Pompeii trip has two stages: first get to a Naples EAV railway station, then take the Naples–Sorrento line toward Pompeii.
For the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances to the archaeological park, the station you want is Pompei Villa dei Misteri, also shown in EAV information as Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri.
Do not assume that every station named “Pompei” takes you to the same entrance. Pompei Santuario serves the Piazza Anfiteatro side, while the mainline FS station called Pompei is another route entirely.
For most cruise visitors heading to the main archaeological site, knowing the exact station name before leaving Naples removes one of the easiest mistakes to make.

What about the Campania Express?
## What about the Campania Express?
Older guides may recommend the Campania Express, a tourist-oriented service with reserved seating and air conditioning.
However, EAV has announced that the service will be suspended from October 1, 2026 until further notice.
If you are travelling after September 2026, check EAV before relying on it. The regular Naples–Sorrento line remains the main route to check for Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri.
How much time do you really need at Pompeii?
Pompeii is much larger than a quick photo stop.
The Archaeological Park covers about 44 hectares and officially recommends allowing at least two to three hours for a visit.
For a cruise passenger, treat those two to three hours as time inside Pompeii — not the total time needed for the day.
You still need to allow for getting from the cruise terminal to the railway, travelling to Pompeii, walking between the station and the entrance, entering the site and making the entire journey back to Naples.
A shorter visit can focus on the main streets, Forum and a limited number of houses. Once you start adding more buildings or simply want time to explore without rushing, the visit can expand quickly.
The mistake is not spending “too long” at Pompeii. It is planning a two- or three-hour Pompeii visit as though the whole excursion will take only two or three hours.
How to avoid the main mistakes on a cruise day
## How to avoid the main mistakes on a cruise day
Start with your ship’s all-aboard time and work backwards.
Decide when you want to be back in Naples, then allow time for the return train and the journey back to the cruise terminal. What remains is your real Pompeii sightseeing window.
Check EAV service information on the morning of your visit, confirm that you are travelling to the correct Pompeii station and avoid any plan that only works if every connection runs perfectly.

Buy your Pompeii ticket before you go
Buying your archaeological-site ticket in advance removes one unnecessary step from a cruise day.
Pompeii recommends advance purchase, and visitors who buy online receive a PDF ticket that can be shown on a phone or printed and taken directly to the entrance turnstiles.
Tickets are personalised, and the site currently limits admissions to 20,000 visitors per day.
As of 2026, the standard ticket for the ancient city costs €20. A €25 Pompeii+ ticket includes the ancient city and additional suburban sites.
Prices and admission rules can change, so check the official Pompeii site again before travelling rather than relying on an old screenshot or travel blog.
Do not bring a large bag into the ruins!
A cruise-day backpack is worth checking before you leave the ship.
Pompeii does not allow bags, backpacks or luggage larger than 30 × 30 × 15 cm inside the excavations.
Paid luggage storage is available at the Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro entrances, but avoiding an oversized bag altogether is simpler when you are working with a limited port day.
When is a tour worth paying for?
A simple way to decide if DIY works for your port call
DIY is a good fit if:
- You have a comfortable amount of time in port.
- You are happy using local rail. You want flexibility inside Pompeii.
- You are comfortable keeping track of your own return time.
Consider an organised excursion if:
- Your port call is relatively short.
- Missing a connection would make you uncomfortable.
- You want a guided explanation of the ruin
- You would rather have the day’s transport organised for you.
