Ancient History & Ruins
Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum
1.5-2 hrs
The reason many passengers come ashore, in the Peace Park learning zone alongside the National Peace Memorial Hall. Open 8.30am to 5.30pm, extended to 6.30pm May to August, ¥200 for adults. Wheelchair users should use the Peace Park tram stop rather than the museum stop, as that one has lift access.
Ancient History & Ruins
Peace Park and the Hypocenter Park
45 min-1 hr for both
Two adjoining open parks usually walked as one: the Hypocenter monument with its preserved layer of melted glass and rubble, and the Peace Statue and Fountain of Peace. Free, with no set hours. The escalator beside the long staircase is not wheelchair-compatible and the approaches are sloped.
Beautiful Scenery
Glover Garden
1-1.5 hrs
UNESCO-listed Meiji-era Western residences terraced on a hillside above the harbour, and the obvious choice on a short call from Matsugae. Open 8am to 6pm with last entry 20 minutes before, ¥1,300. The step-free way up is the Glover Sky Road inclined elevator, which has been suspended in the past — check before relying on it.

Excursion
Optional
One of the easier Japanese ports to do alone. Ships berth close to the centre and the streetcar network reaches the Peace Park, Glover Garden and the station on a flat, cheap one-day pass. The city climbs steeply away from the water, so the hills are the effort, not the distance.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
A FULL DAY, 7-8 HOURS ASHORE, TO DO BOTH CLUSTERS — and on a shorter call you should pick one, because the two sit at opposite ends of the tram network and crossing needs a change of line. No source publishes an end-to-end berth-to-Peace-Park time, and even the official sources name two different interchange stations for the station-to-terminal leg, so do not plan to a number. The choice is really about values, not logistics: the NORTHERN cluster is the Atomic Bomb Museum and Peace Park, the reason most people have heard of Nagasaki, and a substantial, sombre 2-3 hours including transit; the SOUTHERN cluster is Glover Garden, Oura Church and the Confucian Shrine, is the cluster the berth actually sits in, and carries by far the least transit risk. WHICH BERTH YOU GET MATTERS: Matsugae and the Dejima quay are both used by cruise ships, and only Matsugae sits below the Minamiyamate slope.
Accessibility
The terminal itself is well provided — automatic doors, a wheelchair-accessible lift, step-free entrances with slopes, barrier-free and ostomate toilets, a 24-hour accessible toilet with emergency buzzer, braille guidance, an AED, and BOTH MANUAL AND ELECTRIC WHEELCHAIR RENTAL. Beyond it the picture is mixed and needs stating plainly. OURA CHURCH IS NOT STEP-FREE: in its own words there is no non-stair entry and wheelchair users need assistance on a long staircase. GLOVER GARDEN has moving walkways and ramps but the city notes most paths are cobbled with gradients throughout and that touring by wheelchair requires assistance; official advice is to enter at Gate 2 and use the free electric wheelchair. AT PEACE PARK the escalator beside the main staircase is expressly not wheelchair-compatible, with step-free access instead via the underground car park lift or by taxi. The Atomic Bomb Museum is the strongest accessible option in the north, with a roofed slope from the car park straight into the building. ON THE TRAMS, only stops marked with a wheelchair symbol are usable and the operator publishes neither a list of them nor a boarding procedure, so the tram is not a dependable option to a specific stop — though there is an official low-floor-car running-information service.
Weather
Japan Meteorological Agency normals put JUNE AND JULY AS THE WETTEST MONTHS BY A WIDE MARGIN — 335.9 mm and 292.7 mm, at 80 per cent humidity — which is the East Asian rainy season rather than typhoons. August is the hottest, with a mean daily maximum of 31.9°C at 76 per cent humidity. That matters here more than at most ports because the day's own geography is against you: Glover Garden is a cobbled hillside, Oura Church is a long staircase, and Peace Park has slopes from every tram stop. October is dramatically drier at 102.1 mm and milder — the best conditions of the season. On typhoons, the JMA thirty-year normals make AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER the joint peak for approaches to Japan, at 3.3 each with around one landfall a month; the ropeway states it may suspend in severe weather, and because Nagasaki has only ONE BERTH able to take ships over about 70,000 tonnes there is no spare deep berth to absorb a schedule shuffle.
Crowds
9 AUGUST IS NOT A SIGHTSEEING DAY IN THE NORTH. The city holds its Peace Memorial Ceremony every year on that date in front of the Peace Statue in the Peace Park, and the Atomic Bomb Museum itself treats 7-9 August as exceptional, extending its hours to 20.00. A call on 9 August finds the northern cluster functioning as a memorial ceremony rather than a destination, and the museum's own request that the exhibition rooms be viewed quietly is the right guide to tone. Traffic restrictions around the ceremony venue are an official topic but the specific roads, hours and any tram impact are not published in a form that could be confirmed for this record. No sight in the city publishes visitor numbers, peak hours or capacity limits. The one structural point worth making is that Glover Garden and Oura Church are the two sights immediately above the Matsugae berth, so they absorb the walk-off traffic of whatever ship is alongside.
