Optional

Whether you're a short walk from town or need a quick shuttle/sea-bus connection depends on exactly where your ship arrives — but both scenarios are genuinely easy, without Santorini's queue risk.

More details

Most cruise ships dock at the New Port (Tourlos), north of Mykonos Town and not realistically walkable, but a shuttle bus or the Mykonos Sea Bus covers the gap. The Sea Bus operator currently publishes a fare of €2.50 per person, and describes the crossing on its own page as both an 8-minute and a 12-minute trip; its published frequency is every 30 minutes while an affiliated operator page says every 15 on cruise days, so treat the interval as variable rather than fixed. On busier days, ships may instead anchor offshore and tender passengers directly into the Old Port, right in town — genuinely the easier of the two scenarios, since no further transfer is needed at all. Which one happens on a given day depends on ship size and port availability, not something bookable in advance.

Main risk

Shuttle/sea-bus connection back from the New Port

The shuttle and sea-bus both run frequently through the day, with no queue-prone bottleneck reported — a real difference from Santorini's cable car. The operator's own pages differ on the interval, so do not plan against a fixed one.

Getting from the ship

To Mykonos Town (Chora)

Mykonos Sea Bus

New Port to Old Port by sea, a twelve-minute crossing for a couple of euros, running from around 08:30 until late. The operator's own pages disagree on whether it runs every fifteen or every thirty minutes on cruise days.

KTEL bus

Fabrika to the New Port runs hourly, from 09:00 to 22:00. Note that Mykonos has two separate town bus terminals, Fabrika and the Old Port, and different routes leave from each.

Tender

Nine designated anchorages are all flagged for compulsory port tenders, meaning locally operated boats rather than the ship's own — and they land at the Old Port, in town.

Best DIY choice

Chora, Little Venice and the windmills

One compact walkable cluster. If your ship tendered you are already there; if it docked at Tourlos you need the Sea Bus or the hourly bus first.

Check the return boat before you go

Delos

Boats leave from the OLD port, not the New, at 10:00, 11:30 and 17:00, with returns at 13:30 and 15:00 and a crossing of about thirty minutes. The site itself is open 08:00-20:00 April to October and costs €20 on top of the €25 boat. Only workable if your ship is alongside early with a genuinely late all-aboard.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Most cruise stops (6-8 hrs) comfortably cover the town plus the windmills, with time to spare

Accessibility

No accessibility information is published for the cruise area, Chora or Delos. The port fund lists only lighting, waste management, restrooms, waiting shelters and WiFi, and records that there is no passenger terminal building at any berth. Chora is a dense maze of narrow stepped and cobbled lanes, and Delos is an unpaved excavated site — treat the absence of data as a caution.

Weather

No official source states a wind threshold at which Mykonos tender operations stop, so a meltemi day is an unquantifiable risk rather than a known one.

Crowds

Mykonos Town's narrow streets get genuinely crowded by midday in peak season.
