Great Food & Dining

Mercado del Puerto

1-2 hrs

Piedras 237, in Ciudad Vieja immediately beside the port — within the walk-in described above.

The single most efficient stop from a ship: a century-old market hall whose standout, in the city's own words, is the parrillada. Seafood, empanadas and Uruguayan craft beer alongside. The city notes the entrance is accessible but the bathrooms are not.

Ancient History & Ruins

Ciudad Vieja

2-3 hrs

The historic quarter the port opens onto, and the reason Montevideo works without transport. Plaza Independencia, Plaza Matriz and Teatro Solis sit within it, and the whole district is walkable end to end.

Beautiful Scenery

The Rambla

1 hr or a whole afternoon

The waterfront promenade running east from the old city. A short stretch is an easy add-on on foot; the beach districts it leads to are a long way out and need transport, so treat this as a walk rather than a destination unless you have the day.

DIY vs. excursion

Can I DIY this?

Yes

Getting around

Easy

Excursion

Optional

The old city is adjacent to the port area, so walking in is realistic. The Rambla and the beach districts stretch a long way east and need transport.

More details

The Mercado del Puerto sits just outside the port and is the obvious first stop. Beyond the old town, Montevideo spreads out considerably, so a wider tour of the Rambla or Carrasco is a taxi or organised trip rather than a stroll.

Return risk

Low

Main risk

Distance east along the Rambla if you leave the old city

The old town is close to the berth, so a walking day carries little return risk.
