Route 109 from Stop 129 Beacon Cove/Light Rail, a short walk from Station Pier

Listed as a sight because in Melbourne it is the decision. Route 109 runs from Beacon Cove through Port Melbourne into the city; board towards the city, not towards Box Hill, and buy the myki at the desk in the terminal before you leave. Central Melbourne has a free tram zone but Station Pier sits outside it, so the inbound trip is a paid journey even though travel within the centre afterwards is not.

The CBD laneways and arcades

2 hrs

The city's signature, and entirely free. The City of Melbourne publishes its own laneways and arcades walk at approximately 2.4 km and around two hours, taking in Degraves Street, the Block Arcade with its mosaic floor, the Royal Arcade — the oldest covered shopping walkway in Australia — and Hosier Lane's street art. Inside the free tram zone throughout.

Queen Victoria Market

1-2 hrs

Closed Mondays and Wednesdays — the single most useful planning fact here, and the one most likely to waste a morning. Open since 1878, with over 600 small businesses and a place on the National Heritage List. The City of Melbourne's free tram zone extends to the streets around it, so it costs nothing to reach once you are in the centre.

Excursion

Optional

Ships use Station Pier in Port Melbourne, about 3 km from the CBD. Tram stop 129 at Beacon Cove is a 560 metre walk from the terminal, and route 109 runs into the city in about 18 minutes. On most non-turnaround days a dedicated cruise shuttle bus also runs to Southbank in about 15 minutes.

Return risk

Main risk

The cruise shuttle bus stops at 5pm

The dedicated shuttle runs 8am to 5pm and does not run at all on turnaround days. After that it is tram 109 plus the 560 metre walk, or a taxi — and Transport Victoria itself warns route 109 is busier than usual during cruise season.

Simplest approach

Tram 109 into the city, then walk. Once you are inside the Free Tram Zone the trams cost nothing, which makes the CBD, Federation Square and the Southbank riverfront one easy loop.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

5-6 hours for the CBD and Southbank

Accessibility

Ports Victoria publishes no pier-level accessibility detail and directs passengers to their ship operator. Note the free City Circle tram, route 35, is not wheelchair accessible; route 109's low-floor availability is not published.

Crowds

Transport Victoria advises route 109 passengers to allow extra time during cruise season. There is no luggage storage on the pier and no car rental nearby.
