Surface trams to Belém

Top sights

Alfama

2-3 hrs

About 10 minutes on foot from the Doca Jardim do Tabaco terminal.

Steep, stepped and cobbled. Nothing needs arranging, which is what makes it the default here — walk up while you are fresh and come down through the Baixa.

Ancient History & Ruins

Castelo de São Jorge

1-2 hrs

Uphill on foot through Alfama from the terminal.

Open daily except 1 January, 1 May and 24, 25 and 31 December. March to October 09:00–21:00, last admission 20:30; November to February 09:00–18:00, last admission 17:30. Wall and tower access closes earlier.

Ancient History & Ruins

Belém

Half a day

Two legs: walk or metro to Praça da Figueira, then Carris tram 15E westward. No operator publishes an end-to-end time.

Carris lists 15E as Praça da Figueira to Algés. It is a street tram sharing road space and Carris publishes frequent service alterations, so this is the part of a Lisbon day most worth checking on the morning.

DIY vs. excursion

Can I DIY this?

Yes

Getting around

Easy

Excursion

Optional

The main terminal at Doca Jardim do Tabaco lands you at the edge of the old city — Alfama is about ten minutes on foot, and two Blue Line metro stations and Santa Apolónia rail station are within walking distance. Ships never tender here.

Return risk

Low

Main risk

Surface trams to Belém

Walking back from the centre is reliable. The exception is Belém, out to the west: the 15E is a street tram sharing road space, and Carris publishes frequent service alterations — worth checking on the day.

Getting from the ship

To Alfama, the old quarter

Walk out of the terminal into Alfama, or pick up the Blue Line metro at Santa Apolónia or Terreiro do Paço. Taxi Link kiosks and rideshare operate at the terminal, and tour operators have desks on the ground floor.

Exploring Lisbon

Simplest approach

Walk up into Alfama first while you are fresh — it is steep and cobbled — then drop down to the Baixa. Add Belém by tram 15E from Praça da Figueira only if you have a long call.

Best DIY choice

Alfama and the Baixa

On foot from the terminal. Narrow, stepped, cobbled and hilly, but nothing needs arranging.

More planning needed

Belém

Two legs — walk or metro to Praça da Figueira, then tram 15E through traffic — onto two separately-ticketed monuments with long queues.

Consider a tour

Sintra

Outside the city and off the cruise terminal's transit network.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

3-4 hours for Alfama and the Baixa; most of a day if you add Belém

Accessibility

Wheelchair assistance is available on request from security at the terminal entrance. Note that Alfama, the nearest sightseeing area, is also the least step-free: cobbles, stairways and steep lanes.

Crowds

On peak days overflow ships berth at Gare Marítima da Rocha Conde de Óbidos, about 3 km west of the main terminal and not at the edge of the old city. Worth confirming which berth your ship uses.
