The Cinque Terre villages

Most of a day

Shuttle or taxi to La Spezia Centrale — roughly two miles, uphill — then the coastal train

The Cinque Terre Treno MS Card covers unlimited second-class regional travel between La Spezia and Levanto plus Park Authority services, running 14 March to 1 November 2026. Two or three villages is a realistic day, not five.

Porto Venere

Half a day

By sea from Molo Italia on the seafront rather than overland; seasonal

Porto Venere sits on Line 01 of the Gulf of Poets boat service, which connects ten docks including La Spezia, Isola Palmaria and Lerici. A calmer alternative when the Cinque Terre train is the thing you want to avoid.

La Spezia town

About an hour

A little over a mile on foot from the berth.

Not the reason ships call here, but a genuine option on a short call — and it removes the single-rail-line return risk entirely.

Helpful

This is the Cinque Terre gateway. The route is shuttle or taxi to La Spezia Centrale, then the Trenitalia Cinque Terre Express up the coast — Riomaggiore is the first village. La Spezia's own centre is a little over a mile from the berth and worth an hour if you have one.

Return risk

High

Main risk

One railway line, and two miles back from the station

Everything Cinque Terre runs on the single Levanto to La Spezia line, with no road alternative worth the name from the villages. Even back at La Spezia Centrale you still have about two miles to the berth, competing for taxis with everyone else — and on a tender day, a queue after that.

Getting from the ship

To The Cinque Terre villages

Shuttle or taxi to La Spezia Centrale — the station is roughly two miles away and uphill from the waterfront, so it is not a comfortable walk. Shuttles are a chargeable service the cruise line buys, so availability varies by ship. Ferries to Porto Venere and the villages leave from Molo Italia on the seafront, seasonally.

Exploring La Spezia

Simplest approach

Get to La Spezia Centrale, buy a Cinque Terre Treno card for unlimited regional trains between La Spezia and Levanto, and work outward from Riomaggiore. Two or three villages is a realistic day, not five.

Best DIY choice

The Cinque Terre

What this port is for. Train from La Spezia Centrale; the Cinque Terre Treno card covers unlimited regional journeys along the line.

If time is short

La Spezia town

A little over a mile on foot from the berth. Not the reason you are here, but a real alternative on a short call.

Not really this port

Florence and Pisa

Some lines market this call as "Florence/Pisa (La Spezia)". Florence is about two hours each way from a station already two miles from the ship — four-plus hours of transfer. Livorno is the proper Florence and Pisa port; Pisa is more realistic from here than Florence, but neither is why ships call at La Spezia.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

A full day for two or three villages

Accessibility

The cruise terminal itself has level passenger flow and seating. The villages do not: they are steep and stepped, Corniglia has no harbour at all, and on a tender day step-free access is compromised from the outset.

Weather

The Gulf of Poets ferries are strictly seasonal — no service at all from December to February, and suspended again for parts of October and November. Out of season everything funnels onto the one railway line.

Crowds

The Cinque Terre card is priced seasonally, from around 22 euros in low season to 35 in peak, which is a deliberate crowd-management signal as much as a fare.
