Ancient History & Ruins

Kotor Old Town

2 hrs

Under UNESCO protection since 1979, in Montenegro's own words. Stone walls, a labyrinth of alleys, hidden squares and churches, all within a few minutes of the harbour — the reason this port works with nothing booked.

Adventure

City walls and San Giovanni fortress

2-3 hrs

The zigzag climb rising from the sea to the fortress on the hill, with two entrances, both inside the town: Parilo in the north and Skaljarska pjaca in the south. Being on the walls after 22:00 is prohibited year-round — the unlit, steep terrain is treated as extremely risky — and gate hours are set seasonally for daylight, so this is a start-early decision, not an end-of-day one.

Beautiful Scenery

Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Skrpjela)

Half a day including the trip out

The church that appears to float in the middle of the bay, roughly 400 years old, holding a tapestry Jacinta Kunic of Perast wove over 25 years while waiting for her husband to return from sea, partly with strands of her own hair. It is an island, so it needs a boat and therefore a planned trip rather than a walk-off.

DIY vs. excursion

Getting around

Easy

Excursion

Optional

One of the shortest ship-to-sight walks anywhere: the walled Old Town is roughly 100 metres from the harbour. Nothing needs arranging for the town or the walls. Ships longer than about 280 metres anchor in the bay and tender instead, which adds a queue at both ends.

Return risk

Moderate

Main risk

Tender queues, and the fortress climb

Kotor has effectively one large berth, so on multi-ship days a ship anchors and tenders. The other risk is self-inflicted: the walls are a steep climb with a real descent time, and there is a hard daily cutoff on the toll booths.

Getting from the ship

To Kotor's city walls and San Giovanni fortress

Walk. The harbour sits beside the Old Town's walls, and the two wall entrances — Parilo to the north and Skaljarska pjaca to the south — are both inside the town. If your ship is anchored, allow for the tender each way.

Exploring Kotor

Simplest approach

Into the Old Town on foot, then up the walls from whichever of the two entrances is quieter. Start the climb early in the day and in the cool if you can.

Best DIY choice

Kotor Old Town and the walls

About 100 metres from the harbour. Self-evidently independent — no transport, no booking.

More planning needed

Perast, Budva and the wider bay

Beyond walking distance around the bay. Galythia has not verified independent transport options or journey times for these.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

2-3 hours for the Old Town; add 2 hours for the full wall and fortress climb

Accessibility

The Old Town at around 100 metres from the harbour is the accessible half of Kotor. The walls are a climb on a medieval fortification and should be treated as unsuitable for limited mobility.

Weather

Wall opening hours swing hard by season: 7am-8pm May to September, 8am-6pm March and April, 8am-5pm October and November. From December to February the toll booths close and the climb is at your own risk. Being on the walls after 10pm is prohibited year-round.

Crowds

Kotor takes roughly 460 cruise calls a year into a port with one large berth, so peak-summer multi-ship days mean both a busier Old Town and a greater chance of tendering.
