2.5 hr drive from Kahului (NPS)
Maui's volcanic summit, and the one sight here worth accepting a long drive for. Be clear about the cost of it: the National Park Service publishes its own driving time as 'Kahului is 2.5 hours', so the driving alone is most of a port call. Entry is $30 per vehicle, valid three days, and there are no gas stations inside the park — fuel up in Pukalani on the way. The separate sunrise reservation applies only to vehicles entering between 3am and 7am, so it rarely affects a cruise call.

Helpful
There is no walkable visitor district at the pier. Reaching the Maui most people picture — Hana, Haleakala, the west-coast beaches — means a rental car or an organised excursion.
More details
This is the port on a Hawaii itinerary where independent travel takes the most planning. The Road to Hana and Haleakala summit are both long round trips from Kahului and are the main reason a booked excursion is often the safer choice here.

Long round-trip drives to Hana and Haleakala
Maui's signature drives are long round trips, and a self-drive Hana or Haleakala day leaves little margin if anything slows down.
