Ancient History & Ruins

Dalt Vila, the walled upper town

2-3 hrs

About 1 km from the port; a water shuttle and port bus also run into town

Inscribed by UNESCO in 1999 as part of "Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture", and an outstanding example of Renaissance military architecture that influenced fortifications across Spanish settlements in the New World. Seven bastions were raised against Turkish and Barbary raids under Charles I and Philip II, by the engineers Giovanni Battista Calvi from 1555 and Jacobo Paleazzi Fratin from 1575. It is an open public quarter with no gate, ticket or closing time; the monuments inside keep their own hours.

Ancient History & Ruins

Catedral de Santa Maria d'Eivissa

30-45 min

At the summit of Dalt Vila, above the rest of the old town

The hours are the hard constraint and they are narrow: January to May and December, Tuesday to Saturday 10.00-14.00; June to November, Tuesday to Saturday 10.00-14.00 and 17.00-20.00. That means closed Sundays and Mondays, and closed 14.00-17.00 even in high season. Ships are not admitted to the port before 11.30, so you reach the morning window only by moving straight off, and a Monday call cannot see the interior at all.

Ancient History & Ruins

Portal de ses Taules

10-15 min

The main gate of the Renaissance walls and the usual way in from the harbour quarters: a monumental structure shaped like a great triumphal arch, dated 1585 and carrying Roman statues and royal emblems. The approach is a long inclined ramp over the moat rather than a stair, which is worth knowing when planning the climb, though it is not certified as an accessible route.

Helpful

Check the berth before assuming a walk. Smaller ships use Levante Quay inside the harbour, where Dalt Vila begins at the pier. Most large ships use Botafoc Pier, roughly 3 km across the water — the walk is a long loop round the cove, so the shuttle, a taxi or the City Boat from the jetty near the terminal is the practical choice. Once in town Dalt Vila is the draw: steep and cobbled going up, an easy downhill stroll coming back. Talamanca and Figueretes beaches are close to the centre; the quieter island beaches are a tour.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

3-4 hours for Dalt Vila plus the Marina and Sa Penya, and that figure is derived rather than sourced — nobody publishes a recommended duration for this port. What DOES constrain the day is published and unusually sharp: the port authority does not admit cruise ships before 11.30, so the day effectively starts in the early afternoon; the cathedral then shuts 14.00-17.00 and all day Sunday and Monday; and the Puig des Molins museum closes at 15.00 on most days. The realistic core of an Ibiza call is therefore one walled-town circuit plus ONE interior, and the interiors are the binding constraint, not the walking.

Accessibility

DO NOT ASSUME STEP-FREE ACCESS TO DALT VILA. It is a walled hill reached by ramp at the Portal de ses Taules and by stepped streets, with the cathedral at the summit, and no source publishes a gradient, a step count or a certified step-free route. A lift does exist inside the Parador hotel in Dalt Vila, and Paradores has stated publicly that it is open to anyone who wishes to use it, connecting Camí del Calvari with Ronda Calvi and giving access to the cathedral square — BUT its public availability is disputed: earlier in 2026 the same operator was reported as saying the lifts are not continuously open to everyone and are available to those with reduced mobility on request at the parking reception, and the town hall has been publicly pressing for compliance. No operator-published hours, signage or guarantee exists. Separately, because the published cruise berths are in the Botafoc area and the authority's own provision is a boat shuttle, a port bus, the urban bus and taxis, a mobility-limited passenger should know that reaching the old town at all depends on a transfer whose accessibility is not published.

Weather

AEMET's normals for Ibiza give mean daily maxima of 29.7°C in July and 30.3°C in August, with 334 and 305 hours of sunshine in those months and almost no rain (5 mm and 18 mm). Set that against the geography and the timetable: the walk is a stepped climb to a summit, the rampart walks are fully exposed, and passengers are not ashore before 11.30 — so a summer call hits the ascent in the hottest part of the day. May, at a mean maximum of 22.7°C, and October, at 24.0°C, are materially easier for the climb, though October carries the year's highest rainfall normal at 58 mm, with September close behind at 57 mm.

Crowds

THE CROWDING HERE IS TEMPORAL, NOT VOLUMETRIC. The port authority has 205 cruise calls planned for 2026, normally one or two ships a day with three limited to specific days — modest numbers. But it admits cruise ships only from 11.30 and caps disembarkation at 3,000 PASSENGERS PER HOUR, stating explicitly that the cap exists to keep the terminal moving and to avoid overloading the port bus, the urban bus and the taxi service. Everyone therefore lands in the same early-afternoon window, into a hill town with one principal gate, and on a three-ship day the shuttle, bus and taxi queues are the constraint the authority itself names.
