Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome

2-3 hrs

The reason to come, and it is not a quick stop even though the museum itself is compact — its own visitor guide offers a main-building route “in about 30 minutes”, but the park, the Dome and the memorials around them take far longer, and most people want the time. Museum admission is ¥200 for adults and free for junior-high age and younger. Hours run 7:30am to 7:00pm from March to July and September to November, to 8:00pm in August and to 6:00pm from December to February.

Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine

Half a port day

The island with the torii standing in the water, and the second World Heritage site of this call — but treat it as a separate half-day, not an add-on. The Official Guide to Hiroshima puts the Aquanet Hiroshima World Heritage Route boat from the Peace Memorial Park Motoyasubashi Pier at about 45 minutes, which is 90 minutes of travel before anything else. What the torii looks like depends on the tide rather than the timetable, so decide the order of your day around that.

Excursion

Helpful

Two very different sights compete for one port day: the Peace Memorial Park in the city, and the Itsukushima torii on Miyajima, reached by a separate ferry. Doing both is possible on a long call but tide times change what the torii looks like, so pick the order deliberately rather than assuming.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Be honest with yourself about which one this call is for. The Peace Memorial Park and museum take two to three hours properly, and Miyajima is roughly 45 minutes each way by the World Heritage Route boat — so doing both means about an hour and a half in transit on top of both visits. On a short call, pick one. On a long one, decide the order by the tide rather than by convenience.

Crowds

The Peace Memorial Museum states that admission may be temporarily restricted depending on crowd levels, and that buying a same-day ticket can take time. Its own advice is to buy a web ticket in advance — worth doing before the ship docks, because a cruise call arrives into the same peak window as everyone else.

Worth booking ahead?
