Top sights
Ancient History & Ruins
Toitu Otago Settlers Museum
1-2 hrs
About 20 min by road from Port Chalmers
Dunedin's free social-history museum in the walkable central core, open 10am to 5pm every day. On large-ship days the cruise shuttle may set you down at the door. The most reliable choice in town — nothing to book, nothing that sells out, and no weather to beat.
Nature & Wildlife
Royal Albatross Centre, Taiaroa Head
1-1.5 hrs for the tour itself
About 50–60 min drive from central Dunedin
The world's only mainland royal albatross colony, at the tip of the Otago Peninsula. It sits across the harbour from Port Chalmers with no crossing at the head, so the route runs back through Dunedin — a booked-tour sight rather than a self-drive one. Tours run roughly hourly from 11am; early-season calls may see no birds.
Beautiful Scenery
Larnach Castle & Gardens
2-3 hrs
20–25 min drive from central Dunedin, which is itself ~20 min from the berth
New Zealand's only castle, in gardens high on the Otago Peninsula. There is no public transport to it, so you need a booked tour or a hire car. The published times are last entry rather than closing — 5pm in summer, 4pm in winter — so a shoulder-season call faces the earlier cut-off.

Helpful
Port Otago states the majority of cruise ships berth at Port Chalmers, about 20 minutes from Dunedin's city centre, the Octagon. Port Chalmers itself is walkable and pleasant, but it is not Dunedin.
More details
Smaller ships can continue up the harbour and berth alongside Dunedin city, and Port Otago runs cruise terminals at both — so check the berth on your own sailing rather than assuming. The Otago Peninsula wildlife, the albatross colony and Larnach Castle are further out again and are the usual reason to book something.
The Otago Peninsula is where a booked trip earns its place: the albatross colony and Larnach Castle are on the far side of the harbour from the berth, and the castle itself states there is no public transport to it.
Return risk
Moderate
Main risk
Road connection between Port Chalmers and Dunedin
The city and the peninsula are both a road journey from the berth, so the return depends on transport rather than a walk.
Getting from the ship
To Dunedin's heritage centre, with the Otago Peninsula as the major farther excursion area
Walking
Enough for Port Chalmers itself — the small port town around the berth, including its maritime museum. It is NOT enough for Dunedin.
Cruise shuttle or coach
The usual way into central Dunedin. Enterprise Dunedin notes most lines run shuttles either to the Octagon or, on large-ship days, to the Toitu Settlers Museum.
Taxi or rideshare
Available at the port. Dunedin Railways puts the transfer from the port to Dunedin Railway Station at around 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.
Organised excursion
How the Otago Peninsula is realistically reached. Taiaroa Head is on the opposite shore with no crossing at the harbour head, so it means going back round through Dunedin.
Public transport: Limited
Walkable from ship: Yes
Tender port: No
Exploring Dunedin
Simplest approach
Port Chalmers itself is walkable off the ship. For Dunedin and the Octagon, take the transport laid on at the berth; the Otago Peninsula is a further trip again.
Walk-off option
Port Chalmers town
The berth town itself, small and walkable with a maritime museum that extends its hours on cruise days. Worth knowing about, but it is NOT Dunedin.
Needs onward transport
Central Dunedin and the Octagon
Port Otago puts Port Chalmers 20 minutes from the Octagon. Once there, Toitu, the Railway Station and the Octagon are within easy walking distance of each other.
Book ahead
Otago Peninsula
The albatross colony at Taiaroa Head and Larnach Castle are a further trip beyond Dunedin, on the other side of the harbour from the berth. Neither is reachable on scheduled transport.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
Five to six hours gives central Dunedin a fair visit once the 20-minute transfer at each end is allowed for; the Otago Peninsula needs most of a long call and a booked trip.
Accessibility
The day is transfer-based for everything except Port Chalmers itself, so the vehicle or shuttle arranged matters as much as the sights. Port Otago publishes no accessibility detail for either terminal and none is claimed here; in Dunedin, Toitu is the flattest and most predictable option, while the peninsula sights involve slopes and, at Larnach Castle, roads its own operator describes as windy and narrow in places.
Weather
Southern South Island weather turns quickly and much of what makes this call worthwhile — the port town, the peninsula, the railway — is exposed or scenic rather than indoor. Toitu is the reliable wet-weather fallback because it is free, central and open daily.
Crowds
A large-ship day is visible in the shuttle queue rather than at the sights, and Enterprise Dunedin notes the drop-off point itself changes on those days. Port Chalmers is small enough that a full ship makes an impression on it.
