The East Pier

1 hr

5 min on foot

A 2.6 km granite pier with a smooth walking surface and an 1890 bandstand, running out into Dublin Bay. Flat, free and starts at the harbour, so it needs no transport at all.

Ancient History & Ruins

James Joyce Tower & Museum

1 hr

The Martello tower at Sandycove where Ulysses opens, now a free volunteer-run museum. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-16:00 and closed Mondays, which is the one thing to check first.

Ancient History & Ruins

National Maritime Museum of Ireland

1-1.5 hrs

10 min on foot

Housed in the former Mariners' Church in the town centre, open daily 11:00-17:00. Walkable from the pier and the obvious fallback when the weather closes in.

Helpful

A tender port 13 km south of Dublin, and not a substitute for Dublin Port. Ships anchor in Dublin Bay and tender to Carlisle Pier in the middle of the town, so Dun Laoghaire itself is walkable straight off the boat. Dublin needs the DART from the station a few minutes away — every 10-15 minutes, about 20 minutes to Pearse or Connolly. Budget 30-45 minutes for the tender itself at each end, which is the part most people underestimate.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Two to three hours covers the town and the pier. Add the DART and Dublin and you have used the whole day, tendering included.

Accessibility

Tenders land at Carlisle Pier in the middle of town and the pier walk is flat, so the town itself is easy on foot.

Weather

Tendering across Dublin Bay is exposed to wind and fog, and both the pier walk and the harbour front are open to the weather.

Crowds

The People's Park market runs on Sundays only, 10:00-16:00 — worth knowing whichever way your call falls.
