Ancient History & Ruins

Bryggen

1-2 hrs

The old Hanseatic wharf, on the UNESCO World Heritage List and, in the tourist board's words, one of the best known urban areas from the Middle Ages in all of Norway — the German Hanseatic League ran an office here from 1360 and dominated trade for almost 400 years. Narrow alleyways, overhanging galleries, small shops and studios. Free to walk through, and minutes from the berth.

Beautiful Scenery

Floibanen funicular and Mount Floyen

2 hrs

Lower station about five minutes' walk from the Fish Market and Bryggen; roughly six minutes to the top of Floyen at 320 m, for a panorama over the city, fjord and mountains. Troll Forest, trails and cafes at the top. Walking back down takes around 45 minutes, which is the free alternative to a return ticket.

Great Food & Dining

The Fish Market

1 hr

At Torget in the heart of the city, a market since the 1200s and a meeting place for merchants and fishermen. The outdoor market is seasonal; the indoor Mathallen, opened 2012, has permanent shops and restaurants year-round — which matters on a shoulder-season call when the stalls outside may not be there.

Getting around

Excursion

Optional

Unusually easy for a major port. Skolten and Jekteviken are about 500 m apart on the same waterfront and both walk into the centre on a flat, signposted route — Bryggen is roughly five minutes from Skolten. The Floibanen funicular and the Bybanen light rail cover anything further out. Which berth you get is not known until the ship docks, but it barely changes the day.

Exploring Bergen

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

4-6 hours — the centre, Bryggen and Floyen fit comfortably without transport

Crowds

Bryggen is small and absorbs a ship badly; the tourist board itself suggests visiting outside peak hours in summer. The funicular queue is the other pinch point, and both ease if you go early.
