Ancient History & Ruins

Stari Bar

2-3 hrs

The fortified medieval town about 4 km inland, which the Tourist Organisation of Bar calls “among the largest archaeological sites inside the walls in the world” and UNESCO carries on Montenegro's tentative list as “the largest and the most important medieval archaeological site in the Balkans”. Entry is €3 for adults and €1 for children, open 8am to 9pm in season and 8am to 5pm out of it. The ground is unshaded and uphill, so take it in the morning in summer.

Ancient History & Ruins

King Nikola's Castle and the Homeland Museum

45 min-1 hr

Built in 1885 on the seashore by King Nikola and home since 1960 to the Homeland Museum, which holds the most important archaeological finds from this area. It sits on the promenade, so it is the one sight reachable on foot from where the port shuttle drops you, at €1 for adults and €0.50 for children. Confirm it is open before setting out: Montenegro's cultural-heritage authority approved a conservation project for the museum display in 2025, clearing the way for a final phase of reconstruction work.

Nature & Wildlife

Stara Maslina — the Old Olive Tree

45 min

Protected by law since 1963 and described by the Tourist Organisation of Bar as the oldest tree in Europe at more than 2,242 years. It stands at Mirovica, on the fifth kilometre of the road from Bar towards Ulcinj — the opposite direction from Stari Bar, so it is a second taxi leg rather than a stop on the way. Entry is €1, €0.50 for children, open 8am to 6pm all year.

DIY vs. excursion

Excursion

Helpful

Ships berth alongside, but inside a commercial cargo port — a shuttle takes you through the restricted area to the waterfront rather than walking off. From that drop-off the promenade, King Nikola's Palace and the modern town are easy on foot. Stari Bar, the fortified old town about 4 km inland, is the sight worth leaving the waterfront for and is practical by taxi. It is unshaded and uphill, so morning is better in summer. Budva, Ulcinj and Lake Skadar are realistic only on a long call.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Four to five hours covers the promenade, King Nikola's Castle and Stari Bar without hurrying, which is the shape of a good call here. Adding the Old Olive Tree means a separate taxi leg in the other direction and pushes the day towards six. Nothing here needs booking: all three sights are inexpensive walk-ups.

Accessibility

The day starts with a shuttle rather than a walk — the berth is inside a working cargo port and passengers are driven out through the restricted area. From the drop-off the promenade and King Nikola's Castle are level and easy. Stari Bar is the opposite: an open archaeological site on uneven, uphill ground, and there is no step-free version of it.

Weather

Stari Bar is unshaded and uphill, which makes a midday summer visit harder than its 4 km suggests — morning is the better half of the day for it. King Nikola's Castle and the museum are the indoor fallback when the weather is against you.
