Top sights

Ancient History & Ruins

El Morro de Arica

1.5 hrs

The headland standing over the city, with a military history museum and the Cristo de la Paz at the top. Reached by a paved road or a stepped path of twenty minutes or so.

Ancient History & Ruins

Museo Arqueologico San Miguel de Azapa

2 hrs

Holds Chinchorro mummies, the oldest deliberately mummified human remains known, inscribed by UNESCO in 2021. Out in the Azapa Valley, so a taxi or tour is needed.

Ancient History & Ruins

Catedral de San Marcos

30 min

A prefabricated iron church built in Gustave Eiffel's workshops, shipped out and assembled here in the 1870s. On the main plaza, a short walk from the port.

Excursion

Helpful

A compact desert city under a headland, and the port sits close enough to the centre that the cathedral and the plaza are a walk rather than a transfer. El Morro is the landmark: a paved road runs up it and a stepped path climbs it directly, so the view is available either way. The Chinchorro mummies are the reason many people come, and they are in the Azapa Valley outside the city — that one needs a taxi or a tour. Chile sits at Level 2 on the US advisory.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Three hours covers the plaza, the cathedral and the climb up El Morro. Add two more if you go out to Azapa.

Accessibility

The city centre is flat and close to the port. El Morro is the exception — the stepped path is steep, though a road also reaches the top.

Weather

One of the driest inhabited places on earth, so rain is not the issue; sun and glare are, and shade is scarce on the headland.

Worth booking ahead?
