Castillo de Santa Bárbara

2 hrs

The hilltop fortress over the city, and Alicante's own tourism board's principal monument. The climb is optional: a lift runs up from Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora, opposite Postiguet beach, for €2.70, and a shuttle bus from Plaza Puerta del Mar costs €1.45 a trip. Hours are seasonal — 10:00 to 18:00 in midwinter, to 20:00 in spring and autumn, to 23:00 in high summer — and entry closes 40 minutes before the castle does, which is the detail that catches a late-afternoon visit.

Beautiful Scenery

Explanada de España

1 hr

The palm-lined seafront promenade running beside the port, and the natural first stop off the ship: about 2 km on the flat from the terminal, with the old quarter, the museums and Postiguet beach all reachable from it on foot. Free, open and needing no arrangements at all — the part of an Alicante call that still works on a short one.

Excursion

Optional

A compact, genuinely walkable call. The Explanada de Espana is about 2 km — 15-20 minutes on the flat — and from the promenade the old quarter, the museum and the beach are all on foot. Santa Barbara castle is the exception: the walk up is steep, but a lift covers most of the climb for a few euros. Six to eight hours is comfortable without rushing.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Four to five hours covers the promenade, the old quarter and the castle at an unhurried pace, which is why this record already calls six to eight hours comfortable. The castle is the only part with a clock on it: check the season's closing time before setting out, because the grounds shut to new arrivals 40 minutes earlier.

Accessibility

The walk from the terminal to the Explanada is flat, and the old quarter behind it is compact. The castle is the exception and it has been solved rather than left: the lift from Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora removes most of the ascent for €2.70, and the shuttle from Plaza Puerta del Mar is €1.45 a trip, so the steep climb is a choice rather than the only route up.

Weather

The castle is an exposed hilltop and Alicante's tourism board has closed it at short notice during a severe-weather alert, so a wet or stormy call can remove it from the day entirely. The Explanada and the old quarter are the fallback, and both work in weather the hilltop does not.
