Top sights

Ancient History & Ruins

Fuerte de San Diego

1-1.5 hrs

The 1616 Spanish fort above the bay, now Acapulco's history museum under INAH. Two official sources give different opening hours and INAH notes some halls are still closed, so check on the day.

Adventure

La Quebrada cliff divers

1 hr

Divers drop around forty metres into a narrow inlet, timed to the incoming swell — the city's signature spectacle. Shows run to a fixed daily schedule, so it only works if your call overlaps one.

Beaches & Snorkeling

Playa Caleta and Caletilla

2-3 hrs

The twin sheltered beaches of old Acapulco, calm enough for swimming and the departure point for glass-bottom boats to Roqueta Island. In the traditional quarter rather than the hotel strip.

Excursion

Recommended

The maritime terminal sits on the Malecon across from Playa Tlacopanocha, so the Zocalo and the old town are close on foot and the port area itself is easy. The reason this record rates DIY hard is not distance but advice: the US State Department places Guerrero at Level 4, Do Not Travel, naming Acapulco explicitly and barring its own employees from the state, and the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel there. The FCDO also notes that since Hurricane Otis in October 2023 the normal work to reduce risks in the tourist area has been paused while authorities focus on recovery. Read both before deciding how to spend the day.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Half a day covers the fort, the Zocalo and a beach. Most passengers here take a ship excursion rather than build their own day.

Accessibility

The terminal is on the Malecon beside the old town, so the centre is flat and close. The fort sits above it on a rise.

Weather

The Pacific hurricane season runs 15 May to 30 November and September is its peak. Expect heat and humidity throughout.
