Ancient History & Ruins
Tower of Hercules
1-2 hrs
A lighthouse at the harbour entrance since the late first century AD, when the Romans built the Farum Brigantium — and, in UNESCO's words, the only lighthouse of Greco-Roman antiquity to have retained a measure of structural integrity and functional continuity, still used for maritime signalling. It is 55 m tall on a 57 m rock: 34 m of Roman masonry beneath 21 m of Eustaquio Giannini's 18th-century restoration. Inscribed in 2009. It stands at the northern end of the Paseo Maritimo, in the Sculpture Park.
Ancient History & Ruins
Plaza de Maria Pita and the Old Town
2 hrs
The city's main square, with the City Hall and arcaded terraces where the tourism board points visitors for polbo a feira. The medieval and baroque Ciudad Vieja opens directly off it — the churches of Santiago and Santa Maria, museums, and the Archive of the Kingdom of Galicia created in 1775. Together this is the core of an independent day.
Beautiful Scenery
The Paseo Maritimo and the glass galleries
1-2 hrs
The seafront promenade runs from the city centre north to the Tower, passing Riazor and Orzan beaches, and is lined at night with the red lampposts the city enamelled with scenes from its own history. On the harbour side, the galerias of A Marina are the glazed white balconies A Coruna is named for. The walk is the sight, which is why this port rewards going on foot.

Excursion
Optional
A Coruna itself is the independent day, and it is a real one: Plaza de Maria Pita is the city's centre, the Old Town opens directly off it, and the Paseo Maritimo runs from the centre north to the Tower of Hercules with the city beaches along the way. Santiago de Compostela is the other decision entirely — a different city reached by road or rail, and a commitment that ends the A Coruna day rather than extending it. Treat the two as alternatives, not as a sequence.
Getting from the ship
To Tower of Hercules
Cruise ships berth in A Coruna's own harbour, which sits against the city rather than outside it, and the city's spatial logic is simple once ashore: Plaza de Maria Pita is the centre, the Old Town is immediately behind it, and the Paseo Maritimo runs north along the shore to the Tower of Hercules. This record does NOT state a berth-to-centre distance or a walking time — the port authority's cruise pages were not reachable for a first-party figure, and none is invented here.

Exploring A Coruña, Spain
Simplest approach
Start at Maria Pita, walk the Old Town behind it, then take the Paseo Maritimo north along the shore as far as the Tower of Hercules, picking up Riazor and Orzan on the way. It is one continuous line rather than a set of separate trips, which is what makes this port unusually forgiving.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
5-6 hours — enough for the centre, the Old Town and the Paseo to the Tower on foot
Crowds
The Old Town and Maria Pita concentrate arrivals; the Paseo absorbs almost any number. Walking the promenade outward rather than taxiing to the Tower and back is the simplest way to avoid both a queue and a fare.
